NBR to honour top tax, VAT payers next month
FE Report | Wednesday, 20 August 2008
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) will distribute awards among five top income taxpayers in the middle of the next month as a mark of respect to the taxpayers.
The NBR is planning to observe one particular day in the middle of September next as the 'national income tax day'. An approval of the chief adviser (CA) is awaited in this respect.
The NBR chairman Muhammad Abdul Mazid said this at a press conference on Tuesday at the conference room of the board.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Mazid said: "We are following a two-pronged strategy for increasing tax-base. One is meant to motivate people having taxable income to pay tax and the other relates to encouraging declartion of undisclosed income."
He said the NBR has already motivated around 9778 new taxpayers through its massive campaign at the upazila level until July last. The NBR started the programme in February last.
"We will open camps for self-motivated new taxpayers in those upazilas to receive their tax return as there is no tax office in those areas," he said.
In order to ensuring hassle-free tax payment environment, the NBR has introduced one-stop service to assist taxpayers in the submission of tax returns.
The NBR will select top taxpayers from 64 districts and six city corporations to award them. It has collected opinions from all circle offices to select the top five income tax payers.
The NBR will also distribute awards among some of the top VAT payers along with income taxpayers.
