The National Board of Revenue (NBR) will launch a country-wide programme from July 1 to educate the taxpayers on submitting tax returns on their own and without the need of middlemen, revenue board chief said Wednesday.
The board will also consider withdrawal of gift tax in the case of women taxpayers as it sees the measure as discriminatory, he said.
The NBR chairman Dr. Nasiruddin Ahmed said this Wednesday in a pre-budget meeting with the Bangladesh Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BWCCI).
Ahmed made this comment following requests from the women entrepreneurs in the meeting.
The BWCCI arranged the roundtable discussion at NBR conference room in the city. Ruba Rummana, Assistant professor of Ahasanullah University of Science and Technology, presented a paper on 'budget aspirations of women entrepreneurs: 2010-2011'.
BWCCI president Selima Ahmed urged the NBR to fix a flat rate of Value Added Tax (VAT) at 2.0 per cent on Tk 10 million turnover of businesses owned by women entrepreneurs.
The government should offer the facility for women entrepreneurs for the next five years, she said.
BWCCI president also blamed rampant corruption in tax offices as a major reason of unwillingness of women entrepreneurs to pay tax.
"We want specific instruction of the revenue board on punitive measure against the taxmen for harassing taxpayers," she said stressing on introducing online tax-return system to combat corruption.
NBR chairman said the revenue board will review the BWCCI proposals on turnover tax and formation of a separate cell in NBR for assisting women taxpayers.
"In the next budget, the revenue board will simplify tax return form and conduct spot assessment to facilitate small taxpayers," he said.
Women entrepreneurs have shared their experiences on tax payment and requested the NBR chief to take necessary measure to eliminate harassment in tax offices.
"We want to pay tax, not bribe. The government should make the people aware about the process of tax payment through different media campaign," said Sangita Ahmed, senior vice president of BWCCI.
BWCCI director Hasina Newaz said her printing industry has been facing uneven competition as a section of such industry were abusing the bond facility.
