NBR to observe 'Income Tax Day' Sept 01

Doulot Akter Mala | Saturday, 2 August 2008

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has drawn up a work plan for expansion of tax net in the current fiscal through motivation of community leaders and encouraging taxpayers, officials said.

The board has decided to involve district and Upazila administration, imams, and nationally important persons with the motivational drive.

Key-persons of the board will visit all the Upazilas by August as part of the motivational campaign to invite people for payment of taxes.

However, time for filing of individuals' tax return is scheduled to expire on September 30, which usually starts from the first day of every fiscal.

Officials said usually taxpayers rush to the tax offices at the last moment for filing tax returns. So far, response is as usual poor like in previous years.

The NBR also plans to declare September 1 as 'income tax day'. It will organise programme to encourage self-motivated taxpayers to file returns by the deadline.

"We will show all kinds of flexibility to self motivated taxpayers, who have taken new taxpayers identification number (TIN) under the motivational programme," said NBR chairman Muhammad Abdul Mazid.

But, the NBR will take firm action against big tax dodgers, he said adding that it is their responsibility to avail of the opportunity to formalise income.

In the current fiscal, the NBR offered an opportunity to disclose legal yet undisclosed income with payment of 7.5 per cent penalty in addition to normal tax rate. The offer will remain effective for July-October period.

The board has so far received lukewarm response from the undisclosed money holders.

The NBR has decided to give specific directives to all its circle offices for detecting undisclosed income and clarifying position of the board relating to the matter.

NBR chairman said: "Country-wide motivational programme that started from early this year will help the revenue board increase the number of taxpayers."

Officials said the NBR will request the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Islami Foundation to give specific directives to Imams of the mosques.

The Imams will explain the necessity of opening TIN and motivate the people gathered for Jumma prayer for payment of income tax, they said.

Revenue board is also expediting the process to award top five taxpayers at district level, they added.

The NBR has invited proposals through all circle offices for awarding top taxpayers.

In the just concluded fiscal, the collections of income tax department hit a record in its history.

Revenue officials have geared up their effort from the first day of current fiscal to maintain the trend.

The revenue board chief launched motivational programmes and documentaries on July 1 and visited taxpayers in places including Savar, Satkhira.
