The National Board of Revenue (NBR) will publish a list of polls aspirants who are not taxpayers' but intend to participate in next national and Upazila elections.
The Board is now collecting information about the polls aspirants across the country and planning to publish Sunday a list of those not having any TIN, said NBR Chairman Muhammad Abdul Mazid.
"There is no specific rule restricting participation of tax evaders in the national election. We're collecting information whether the poll aspirants have TIN or not following request of the Election Commission (EC)," the NBR chief said.
The EC will decide the fate of election candidates without TIN as per existing rule, he added.
It is easy to define any one as loan defaulter or bill defaulter rather than calling one a tax evader as most of the people identified as tax dodgers have filed court cases against the NBR, he said.
In the Representation of the People Order (RPO), any person willing to contest the elections is required to clear default loans and outstanding utility bills seven days before submission of nomination papers. But, there are no such specific indications in the RPO for tax evaders.
The EC has asked the NBR just to verify the latest tax payment of poll aspirants whether they have filed tax returns of 2007-08 or not, the NBR chief said.
Some poll aspirants also paid due taxes before submission of their nomination papers, he said.
Recently, an election candidate has paid Tk 7.9 million as due taxes to the public exchequer after being detected by the taxmen.
It has been found that a number of election candidates spent millions of taka before polls but they are not taxpayers. This year, the government is seriously conducting the tax-related scrutiny.
"The nation should know the names of polls aspirants who do not have any TIN (taxpayer's identification number)," said the NBR chief.
Recently, the central bank has published lists of loan defaulters among the polls aspirants.
