NBR to release citizen's charter January 5

Friday, 28 December 2007

FE Report
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) will release a 'citizen's charter' on January 5 aiming to bring transparency in its activities.
Finance adviser Mirza Azizul Islam is expected to unveil the charter.
Sources concerned said the board has already completed all procedures. It has prepared the draft citizen's charter compiling matters relating to VAT, income tax and customs.
The citizen's charter contains details of work procedures and responsibilities of revenue officials and specific time for file disposal at the revenue offices.
Sources said there are allegations of harassment of taxpayers by taxmen and delay in file disposal. These are the reasons why the taxpayers are unwilling to visit tax offices to submit their returns, they added.
After the issuance of the charter the taxpayers will be able to know whom to contact and the disposal time of tax file.
A total of 45 field offices of the board will display the charter in its respective offices.
Currently, there are 2.2 million TIN (taxpayers identification number) holders, but the number of tax return is around 0.7 million.
The board is now examining the reasons for such poor response from taxpayers in filing of tax returns.
