The National Credit and Commerce Bank Limited (NCC) Thursday distributed Tk 65,67,000 agriculture loan among 263 soybean farmers of Laxmipur district for the first time as part of the bank's initiatives to boost non-traditional crop cultivation in the country.
The private bank has undertaken a pilot project aiming to disburse Tk 10 million agriculture loan within this calendar year among soybean farmers in two districts -- namely Laksmipur and Raipur-to cultivate 1348.13 acres of land.
Governor of Bangladesh Bank Atiur Rahman handed over the loans personally to the farmers at a colourful ceremony, organised by the NCC Bank at Nasir Ahmed Bhuiyan auditorium.
Presided over by NCC Bank chairman Yakub Ali, the loan distribution ceremony was also attended by Executive Director of the Bangladesh Bank Abul Qashem, NCC Bank Director Khairul Alam Chaklader, local District Commissioner Rafikul Islam Sarker and other higher officials of the bank.
Launching the direct agriculture loan to soybean farmers, Dr Atiur Rahman said, " Agriculture is no longer confined to the boundary of traditional method. Mode of agro-farming has changed with the time. It needs greater and easier financing now."
"To boost agro-production in the country, the government has taken various kind of steps like bank account opening with only Tk 10. No banks will go unpunished if they show negligence in this regard."
"Every possible step would be taken to stop harassment inflicted to the farmers. Accountability also will be ensured in properly distributing agro-credit among the farmers," said the BB boss.
He said, "Time has changed a lot. Those days have gone, when farmers remained imprisoned in the hand of usurer of village."
"Farmer does not come to the bank to beg. It's his right to get credit," he said.
Calling upon the farmer to repay the loans in time, he said, " Farmers are not loan defaulters. But some so-called people are loan defaulters who are doing business taking loan from the banks."
Rahman urged the banks to provide loan among the farmers, who are the life-line of agriculture, on easier conditions and procedure.
"Central Bank is making efforts to refinance loans to build agro-based industry in Bangladesh," he said.
Nurul Amin, Managing Director of NCC Bank, said, " The bank has undertaken various projects to finance farmers attempting to alleviate poverty from the country."
"NCC Bank has already taken some pilot projects to improve the lot of Monga-hit maize-farmers of Patgram under the district of Lalmonirhat. It has also planned to finance farmers of Tangail, Modhupur to encourage pineapple farming," he said.
"Under the pilot projects, around Tk 10 million credit will be distributed among the soybean farmers of Laksmypur and Raipur this year," said Amin.
