Need for correct statistics on unemployment
Thursday, 5 November 2020
The number of unemployed people in the country is officially estimated at 2.7 million. There are contradictory figures about the statement of employment or unemployment. Even the method of how a person is considered employed is considered as flawed since disguised unemployment is not well-defined. Around 50 per cent of the educated youths were earlier found to be unemployed.
There is no reason to believe that the situation has improved after the outbreak of the coronavirus. Rather more people have lost working opportunities while new workforce cannot be absorbed at home or abroad. A former caretaker government adviser said he did not believe the figures on employment. So, there is a need for producing more accurate statistics and take remedial measures.
