Negative campaign against Joy a bid to hide Koko's corruption: AL
Tuesday, 23 December 2008
Awami League (AL) Monday alleged a negative campaign is on against Joy, son of Sheikh Hasina, to divert people's attention from bribery-and money-laundering "scandal" of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's son Arafat Rahman Koko, reports UNB.
"Already some people have been arrested for distributing malicious leaflets against Sajib Wajed Joy. We strongly condemn such deliberate and false propaganda. As the BNP-Jamaat force has to face the harsh truth, they have resorted to falsehood to stigmatise Sajib Wajed Joy," said Co-Chairman of Awami League Election Steering Committee HT Imam.
Addressing a press conference at the AL Media Centre in the afternoon Imam also refuted any involvement of the Awami League in making reports of money siphoning and taking bribe by Koko -- a latest talk of the town ahead of the national elections after the Anti-corruption Commission opened the Pandora's box.
"The Attorney General of Singapore government himself investigated Koko's money-siphoning incident and later informed the Anti-corruption Commission. And the report of taking bribe by Koko from Siemens Company has also been made by the international media. Then, how can Awami League have a hand in publishing the news?" HT Imam posed a question.
Imam noted that Awami League does not disrespect Khaleda Zia and her family. "But, after such incidents, we have nowhere to hide our face. How a young person like Koko needs such an enormous amount of money!" he wondered.
HT Imam also voiced concern over incidents of attacks on the Awami League candidates at places in the capital and elsewhere in the country.
"The car of our candidate from Rajshahi-1 constituency Omar Faruque has come under attack by some miscreants in Tanore Upazila. Our candidates from Sirajganj-2 Jannat Ara Henri and Dr Hasan Mahmud from Chittagong have also been attacked," he said.
HT Imam said though Awami League was calling the attackers "miscreants", they knew the identities of the attackers.
He alleged that by launching such attacks, they (the attackers) want to foil the December 29 polls.
