Negligence alleged in RU teacher Shafiul killing probe

Wednesday, 3 December 2014

Rajshahi University (RU) teachers have alleged serious neglect in the murder investigations of their colleague AKM Shafiul Islam. Teachers Association President Kamrul Hasan made the allegation from a human-chain formed by the sociology department on the campus. He also warned of tougher agitations by teachers if the investigation was not conducted properly. The department’s students also joined the protest. Both police and RAB had claimed different motives after Islam was hacked to death near his house in Chouddapai near the RU campus on Nov 15. Police had arrested 11 people and claimed ‘Jamaat-e-Islami-controlled’ militants were behind the murder. But several days later, RAB arrested six other people and claimed that the sociology teacher was murdered to settle a ‘personal score’. However, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Shamsuddin after a few days said their investigation was now following the RAB lead. RU teacher Kamrul Hasan has said, ‘We only wanted proper investigation into our colleague’s murder. But we are alarmed to see that probe is being neglected,’ according to bdnews24.com.
