Nepal, Bhutan can ensure SAARC states' energy security: Dipu Moni

Foreign Minister Dipu Moni Saturday said utilising the potentials of hydro-electricity in Nepal and Bhutan and sharing electricity among SAARC member states could ensure a long-term energy security in the region, reports UNB.
"We must exploit the existing prospects and opportunities for developing regional gas and power grid, promoting renewable energy technology and energy diversity," she told a workshop.
The Foreign Minister was speaking as the chief guest at the workshop titled 'Achievements, Failures and Challenges of SAARC' jointly organised by South Asia Free Media Association (SAFMA) and Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) at BRAC Centre Inn in the city.
Presided over by SAFMA president Reazuddin Ahmed, the workshop was also addressed by Foreign Secretary M Touhid Hossain, Prof Imtiaz Ahmed of Dhaka University, Pakistan Deputy High Commissioner Aiaj M Khan, Political Counsellor of Indian High Commission M Subbaray Udu, Consular of Bhutan High Commission Ugyen Dorji, first secretary of Sri Lanka High Commission Muna Singhe, SAFMA secretary general Zahiduzzman Faruque, DECAB president Masud Karim and its general secretary Imran Alam.
Senior journalist and analysts on international affairs Zaglul Ahmed Chowdhury presented the keynote paper at the workshop. Senior and young journalists took part in the open discussion and many of them expressed disappointment over the little achievements but many failures of the SAARC that started its journey in 1985.
