With the recent ugly incidents of enforced-disappearances, abductions and killings are haunting the people of the country, a report about a similar incident has sent a new panic wave across the country. A nephew of Mosharraf Hossain, assistant personal secretary (APS) to the health minister has reportedly been kidnapped. Sabuj Rana, 18, went missing on Wednesday afternoon after he along with a friend left his home in Belkuchi Upazila in Sirajganj district to attend a wedding ceremony in Sherpur Upazila in Bogra. Family says his mother received phone calls on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning demanding Tk 3 million as ransom. The caller also threatened to kill Sabuj if ransom was not paid. Sabuj’s friend, Rakibul Islam, a nephew of Sherpur Upazila unit of Awami League President Mokbul Hossain, was detained by police for questioning from the house in Sherpur where both the boys were supposed to be present. One of uncles of Sabuj said Sabuj and Rakib on Wednesday left Sirajganj’s Belkuchi for Sherpur of Bogra to attend the marriage of Rakib’s cousin there. Police in Sherpur said Rakib had been detained from his cousin’s home and would be handed over to police in Belkuchi Upazila. He has denied any involvement in his friend’s disappearance, according to a news agency.
