Thursday, 10 June 2010

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Wednesday said that if necessary, the government would enact a new act to take stern action against the eve-teasers to ensure an education-friendly atmosphere for the schoolgirls, reports UNB.
He made the announcement at a press conference at his office after a preparatory meeting of the ministry.
Speaking on the occasion, Nahid said stern action would be taken against the eve-teasers even if they were powerful and under political shelter.
"We can't stop the criminals from such kind of offenses by only enacting a law, we have to introduce a social movement for creating a mass awareness against them," he said.
Nahid sought cooperation from media in introducing a mass movement against the eve-teasers.
The Education Minister also urged all to participate in observing the day for ensuring an education-friendly atmosphere in the country for female students by eliminating eve-teasing.
Earlier, the government has decided to observe an Anti-eve-teasing Day across the country on June 13 aimed at creating a mass awareness against the eve-teasers, and spare schoolgirls from being harassed.
Education Ministry had already sent letters to all Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) to observe the day.
Different programmes including rallies, meetings, oath-taking and leaflet and poster distribution have been chalked out to make the people aware against eve-teasing on June 13.
The Education Ministry will arrange the programme to protest against eve-teasing at upazila and district levels on June 13. A rally will be organised at the premises of the Central Shaheed Minar in the city on June 13, where thousands of people including students, teachers, human rights activist and guardians are likely to take part.
Education Secretary Sayed Ataur Rahman, and additional secretaries Sirajul Islam and SM Golam Faruque were also present at the press conference.
