New ADB country director visits LGED headquarters

Paul J Heytens, new country director of Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Bangladesh, visited the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) head office in the city Thursday.
LGED Chief Engineer Md Nurul Islam welcomed Heytens at an informal meeting and introduced the senior engineers and project directors of LGED to him, says a press release.
A good number of LGED senior engineers and project directors and representatives of ADB were present on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, the ADB country director said LGED has the reputation of being the best executing agency in Bangladesh for the implementation of development projects.
Mr. Heytens said that the relationship between ADB and LGED would be cemented further in days to come. He was pleased to learn that all the projects under ADB assistance were progressing well in LGED.
Later, LGED Additional Chief Engineer Md Wahidur Rahman delivered a presentation on the brief history of LGED's evolution.
As regards ADB assistance to LGED, Mr. Rahman said at present a total number of 41 projects at a total cost of $1530.53 millions are being implemented by LGED. LGED has completed 24 projects already, while there are 10 ongoing projects and 7 projects remain in the pipeline.
He said, ADB's assistance in LGED projects is very significant in terms of physical improvement, institutional development, empowerment of women, strengthening capacity of local government institutions, generation of employment and establishment of good governance at local level.
ADB country director later made the rounds of various units of LGED head office.
