New BB chief to be named today
Tuesday, 28 April 2009
Finance Minister AMA Muhith Monday said the name of the new Bangladesh Bank (BB) governor would be announced today (Tuesday) after completing necessary formalities, reports UNB.
He, however, declined to disclose the name before the official announcement.
Someone from among economists, financial sector bureaucrats, bankers and people working in the multilateral donor agencies has been chosen, Muhith told reporters.
Officials said the Ministry of Establishment was taking necessary measures to submit a proposal in this regard to the President for approval.
Newspapers reported that economist and development researcher Dr Atiur Rahman is likely to replace incumbent Governor Dr Salehuddin Ahmed, who completes his four-year tenure on April 30.
If appointed, Dr Atiur, chairman of Unnayan Shamunnay and a former BIDS research fellow, would be the 10th Governor of the central bank of Bangladesh.
