Some North American and European buyers are showing interest to import garment products from Bangladesh due to its cheaper prices, manufacturers said Friday.
The buyers are from Mexico, Poland, Peru and Russia.
Local manufacturers said the buyers are coming mainly because of competitive prices offered by Bangladesh.
A few dozens of buyers and importers were seen busy giving spot orders at the three-day long BATEXPO-2008, which is being held at a city hotel.
Engineer Salam Chowdhury, chairman of Trade Fair Committee said: "There are many reasons for renewed buyers' interest in Bangladesh products in this fair."
He said the buyers are now convinced about quality of the denim fabrics, fashionable designs and above all the competitive prices.
There are around 12 denim producing companies capable of competing in the modern day fashion world.
Ashish, a senior marketing official of Shasha Denims, told the FE that buyers from Mexico and Peru visited the company stall and enquired about the products.
BGMEA president Anwar-Ul-Alam Chowdhury said garment manufacturers now want to explore more export destinations.
"Our professionalism and capacity are growing up day-by-day. So, we need new markets for the sector," he said.
Salam Murshedhy, a BGMEA director, said Bangladesh now needs to organise single-country fair in non-traditional destinations for expansion of market.
"It is surprising that buyers from countries like Australia and Austria are showing keen interest to import garment products from Bangladesh," said Murshedhy.
Engineer Salam said that a number of buyers from China have also shown interest to import clothes from Bangladesh as producing garments in their own country has become expensive.
Bangladesh exported garments worth US$ 10.7 billion in fiscal 2007-08. Around 28 per cent of exports were shipped to the USA and the rest to European countries, mainly Germany, Netherlands and Britain.
