New disability law to focus on autistic people

The government will devote a separate chapter in the new law for disables, which will help autistic people protect their rights, said a government official. Director general of Department of Social Services Md Moshiur Rahman said, "The government is working on the draft of law for the people with disability and there will be a separate chapter for the autistic people." "The government has a plan to work for the autistic people under public-private partnership (PPP) and has urged private organisations who are working for the same cause," he said. He was speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of a four-day long handicraft fair, organised by the Autism Welfare Foundation at its premises in Mohammadpur in the city. Autism Welfare Foundation chairperson Rownak Hafiz said, "People are not aware of autism. We are organising this fair with a view to creating awareness about autism, social development of autistic children and how to make autistic people self employed." "Autism is separate from intelligence disability. The growth of each phase of a person with intelligence disability is same but the growth of each phase of an autistic person is not in same pace." She said, "Parents can identify the disease if they watch their baby precisely and try to find out the baby's activities and communication are normal or not." "With the help of proper education curriculum, an autistic child will be able to lead normal life and do better than any other normal child," he added. Around 10 per cent of autistic people are very much skilled in drawing, singing and mathematics and computer operating, she said. Autism Welfare Foundation, a non-governmental organization, has been working for the cause of autistic children since 2004. The number of students of the organisation's education wing 'Kanon' has reached 150. The fair will display painted dresses, sarees, ornaments, wax work, puppet, show pieces made of different things, and etc. The fair will remain open from 10:00am to 4:00pm everyday till April 13.
