New edn policy draft handed over to PM

Tuesday, 8 September 2009

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Monday received the draft of the Education Policy 2009.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid handed over the draft copy of the country's new education policy to the Prime Minister at her office at the Jatiya Sangsad, reports UNB.
The draft policy envisages basic changes to set the country's outmoded education system in tune with the fast-moving world.
Emerging from the PM's Parliament office, the Education Minister told reporters that the draft education policy has been formulated on the basis of recommendations placed by the National Professor Kabir Chowdhury-led Education Policy Formulation Committee.
The committee submitted their report to the ministry on September 2.
Nahid said the Education Policy would be finalised by this yearend and is expected to be implemented from next year.
He said the draft policy, from now on, will be available on the website of the Education Ministry for eliciting public opinion till the last day of the current month.
"Our government wants to formulate really a modern and universally accepted education policy. We want people of various walks of life put their constructive opinion on the education policy on the ministry's website," said the minister.
Asked about the main aim of formulating a fresh education policy, Nahid said under the present education system, it is not possible to turn Bangladesh into a developed and prosperous country.
Nahid further noted that implementation of the Bangladesh Awami League-declared Vision 2021 largely depends on a well-educated young community and that's why the country's education system must be upgraded to world standards.
