The government has taken initiative to increase food storage capacity by 100,000 tonnes more this year than previous year to ensure food security, Food and Disaster Management Minister Abdur Razzaque said. Razzaque said, "We are constructing new food warehouses with a total capacity of 135,000 tonnes including the ones with 110,000 tonnes capacity in the northern region. Besides, old warehouses all over the country will be repaired for proper utilisation." "Now the government food storing capacity is only 1.5 million tonnes which is not sufficient enough to ensure food security. The capacity will reach 2.2 million tonnes within three years and it will be 3.0 million tonnes by 2020. " He said this as chief guest while inaugurating two warehouses with capacity of 1000 tonnes at Sabekpara of Gabtoli in Bogra and at Manda in Naogaon Sunday, said a press release. Mr Razzaque visited construction work of two warehouses having a capacity of 1000 tonnes at Dupchachia in Bogra and seven storehouses with capacity of 1000 tonnes and a warehouse with 500 tonnes capacity at Santahar. The construction work of these warehouses is expected to be finished within one month. He said the government is building 140 new warehouses in Rajshahi and Rangpur to increase the capacity by 110,000 tonnes more in Northern region as a large quantity of paddy is produced there. Among those, 80 warehouses have a capacity of 1000 tonnes each and the rest have capacity of 500 tonnes. The construction of 85 storehouses has already been completed and the rest will be completed soon. The government is constructing a storehouse with a capacity of 84,000 tonnes at Central Storage Depot (CSD) in Chittagong Halishahar, a concrete grain silo with 50,000 tonnes capacity in Mongla. Besides, three new silos will be built at Baghabari in Sirajganj, Santahar in Bogra and Postogola in Dhaka.
