New Gas Co in Ctg starts operation

CHITTAGONG, Feb 10: Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company (KGDC), a new government enterprise to facilitate gas supply from Bakhrabad Gas Systems Ltd (BGSL), has started operation after getting registration from Monday the registrar of joint stock companies (RJSC) after a long struggle with the BGSL.
Following the demand of local people, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asked the concerned authorities to go ahead with KDGC, as the people and industries in the port city consumed over 90 per cent of the total gas supplied by BGSL, sources said.
The senior officials of BGSL, having its head office in Comilla, hardly address the problems of the consumers duly, locals alleged.
They also suspended new gas connections to all industrial units in the port city.
As a result, new and old industries in the readymade garment sector have been awaiting to go to commercial operations for the last six months.
According to local businessmen, Chittagong is getting only 200 million cubic feet of gas against the demand of 300 million cft at present.
