New gas distribution co opens today

FE Report | Tuesday, 26 August 2008

A new state-owned gas distribution company - Sundarban Gas Company Ltd (SGCL) - kicks off operation today (Tuesday) to facilitate natural gas supply to the consumers of southwestern region of the country, officials said.

Chief Adviser's special assistant professor M Tamim will inaugurate the SGCL office in Khulna at a simple function.

When contacted, professor M Tamim said a number of new gas distribution companies would also be established soon to ensure smooth supply of the fuel to the deserving consumers across the country.

For the Chittagong region a new gas distribution company - Karnafuli Gas Company Ltd (KGCL) - would also be established soon, he said.

The Titas Gas Transmission Distribution Company Ltd (TGTDCL) would be divided into three separate companies shortly, said energy ministry officials.

Several years ago the energy ministry took an initiative to break up Titas into three separate companies and Bakhrabad Gas Systems Limited (BGSL) into two companies but failed following opposition from the previous government high-ups and trade unionists.

As per that plan Titas was to be divided into Titas Gas Distribution Company Ltd (TGDCL), Brahmaputra Gas Distribution Company Ltd (BGDCL) and Shitalakkhya Gas Distribution Company Ltd (SGDCL).

The BGSL was to be divided into two companies - Bakhrabad Gas Distribution Company Limited and Karnafuli Gas Distribution Company Limited (KGDCL), sources added.
