CHATTOGRAM Oct 07: Bangladesh Railway (BR) will construct new Kalurghat Bridge by 2022, said the Railways Minister Nurul Islam Sujan after visiting the prevailing old Kalurghat Bridge on Wednesday morning.
"Karnaphuli is a heritage of not only Chattogram, but also Bangladesh. People of Chattogram have been demanding for new Kalurghat Bridge for many years. We will realise the demand of people of Chattogram by constructing new rail-cum-road bridge at Kalurghat on the Karnaphuli river," Railways Minister Nurul Islam Sujan MP said.
He also said, "I have already discussed with the engineers and they proposed to construct separate two bridges for rail and road. Later, I have discussed with the prime minister and she directed to construct one bridge with the facilities of rail lines and road."
"I have visited the Kalurghat Bridge today (Wednesday) and I hope that we will construct one bridge with the facilities of rail lines and road replacing the old Kalurghat Bridge by 2022 next, " the minister added.
"After completing the new Kalurghat Bridge, country's railway communication will start with Myanmar and India. Therefore, it is very important," he mentioned.
