Friday, 29 August 2008

The newly elected mayor of Khulna City Corporation (KCC), 30 out of 31 councilors and 10 female councilors (reserved seat) Thursday resigned from posts of their respective political parties as a pre-condition to taking oath, reports UNB from Khulna.

Newly elected KCC Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque, who is also president of the city unit of Awami League, resigned from his party post earlier, and in writing informed the matter to Director of Local Government Division Mohammad Rais Uddin Thursday.

Thirty out of 31 councilors and 10 female councilors also resigned from their party posts, and through separate applications informed it to Rais Uddin Thursday.

They all resigned from posts of respective parties to comply with an earlier order of the Election Commission, which stated that anyone elected to any office of KCC cannot take oath unless he/she resigns from party posts by August 28.

Most of those resigned from party posts belonged to the two major political parties, BNP and Awami League.

Meanwhile, the four newly elected city mayors and nine municipal mayors will be sworn in to office by Sep 11, Local Government Adviser Anwarul Iqbal said Thursday. However, he said the final schedule and venue for the swearing-in ceremony were still to be decided.
