New licences soon to check illegal VoIPs

Monday, 8 February 2010

Ministry of Post and Telecommunications will issue four new types of licences under the amended International Long Distance Telecommunications Services (ILDTS) policy for checking all illegal VoIPs in the country, reports BSS.
Post and Telecommunication Secretary Sunil Kanti Bose Sunday told the news agency that the new licences were International Gateway, International Exchange, Internet Gateway and National Internet Exchange.
The government would undertake further development programmes of telecommunications under the amended ILDTS policy, which was sent to the law ministry last week for final vetting, he said.
Sources said the Cabinet meeting last month asked the post and telecommunications ministry to deal with the licensing process of the telecommunications sector after discussing the amended IDLTS policy.
After getting the directives of the Cabinet, the ministry has taken different important decisions including forming an information technology cell.
The proposal of forming the cell would be placed for final approval to the secretariat committee meeting to be held tomorrow (Tuesday), the sources said.
Besides, the ministry will also give decision on renewing the licences of four mobile phone operators Grameen Phone, Aktel, Banglalink and City Cell, whose licences will expire in 2011, it said.
Bangladesh Telecommunication and Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has already started the work of preparing a guideline for renewing the licences, the source added.
