Thursday, 7 May 2015

The three newly elected mayors of Dhaka and Chittagong -- Annisul Huq, Sayeed Khokon and AJM Nasir -- reaffirmed Wednesday their commitments to put in their all-out efforts for the development of their respective cities and ensure various civic amenities to the city dwellers, report agencies.
The three mayors - Annisul Huq of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), Sayeed Khokon of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and AJM Nasir Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) -- came up with their fresh vow while talking to reporters just after their sworn-in ceremony at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).
Newly elected mayors and councillors of three city corporations -- Dhaka North, Dhaka South and Chittagong City-- have taken oath Wednesday in a simple ceremony.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina administered the oath to the newly elected Mayors at her Tejgaon office in the city Wednesday morning.
Earlier, LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Sayed Ashraful Islam administered the oath to 176 councillors including 45 female councillors in reserved seats.
Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, leader of the opposition Begum Rowshan Ershad, cabinet members, state ministers and MPs and leaders of political parties were present.
Annisul Huq expressed his gratitude to the voters who cast their votes in favour of him and also to those who campaigned for him.
Expressing his resolve to build a neat and clean city, the newly elected DNCC mayor sought cooperation of all in reshaping the city. "I need everyone's cooperation," said Annisul.
He urged the city dwellers to come up with their suggestions for the development of the city not with any personal request.
Annisul said he would be working for building a liveable city through taking short-, mid- and long-term programmes.
Talking to the journalists, DSCC Mayor Sayeed Khokon said that he will take all-out efforts for the development of the city, ease traffic congestions, repair roads and make it free from garbage.
"I'll do that from the day one," he added.
Chittagong City mayor AJM Nasir vowed to mitigate the water logging in the port city, but reminded that it would not be possible for him to do that overnight.
But he mentioned that it would be possible for him to solve the problem within his tenure. "I am hundred percent sure about it," he said adding, "We'll have to take a long-term plan for this, we'll have to increase the capacity of the drainage system and build a new system."
