Sunday, 6 July 2014

New bank notes of different denominations, worth Tk 160 billion, will be released on Monday. The central bank took the decision last week to release the new notes before Eid-ul-Fitr to meet the growing demand for currencies ahead of the biggest religious festival of the Muslims. Apart from that, the Bangladesh Bank (BB) has decided to release new coins of different denominators worth Tk 50 billion. The BB also planned to open 20 counters in different banks in addition to 27 counters in various banks of divisional cities to ensure smooth supply of the new currencies. There will be many counters in future including seven VIP counters, of which one will be at the BB’s Motijheel office in the heart of the city. ED of the central bank’s Currency Management Department Asim Kumar Dasgupta said the supply of new currency will begin on July 7. BB has also instructed banks to check authenticity of the new notes to prevent circulation of counterfeit currency, he added, according to a news agency.
