New political front for mid-term polls

FE Report | Friday, 16 January 2015

Bangladesh National Alliance (BNA) -- a new political group floated on Thursday-suggested enacting law or bringing amendment to the constitution for mid-term election to rid the nation of the ongoing violent politics.
Barrister Nazmul Huda, expelled from Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), was made Chairman of Bangladesh Jatiya Jote (BNA) also demanded holding of dialogue among the leaders of Awami League (AL) and BNP under the good offices of the United Nations (UN).
He called upon AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to initiate dialogue with the help of the UN by shunning the path of violence considering the country's interests.
Huda, also a former minister, said, "Initiate dialogue with the help of the UN. There is no alternative to dialogue for resolving the present political crisis. And we want to say that the two leaders (Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia) could not shirk their responsibilities."
He said the mid-term election could only end the present politics of blockade and violence.
Reading out the manifesto of the alliance he called upon Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia to sit for dialogue immediately.
"Otherwise, we (BNA) along with the people of the country will put them (Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia) in the dock", he warned.
Asked whether the present situation is favourable for holding the fair election he said, "No election could be meaningful if the Election Commission (EC) and the administration do not discharge their duties properly".
He, however, said BNA would continue its efforts to create an election-friendly environment in the country.
Mr Huda said his political alliance -- a combination of 25 political parties -- will resist any adverse comments against Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Haque, Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani, Hossain Shaheed Suhrawardy, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and declarer of independence and valiant freedom fighter Ziaur Rahman.
"We will stop politics of vengeance. We will establish rule of law through solid unity. We will make Bangladesh a country that would ensure human rights," he said.
He said they will free the country from the curse of politicisation and keep the administration and judiciary independent and impartial.
Chairmen and secretaries general of the 25 parties, among others, were present.
