New taxi cabs hit city streets today

New taxi cabs hit the city streets today (Tuesday) with the fares revised by the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) amid criticism from different quarters.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will launch the Bangladesh Army Welfare Trust-led taxi cab service from the Army Golf Garden in the morning.
On the other hand, Communications Minister Obaidul Quader will inaugurate the taxi cab service to be operated by Toma Group from the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) headquarters.
Though the government is yet to issue the notification on fares for the new taxi service, officials said all the 47 new cabs charge fares at the rate revised by the BRTA and endorsed by the ministry of communications in a meeting on March 23.
The notification would be issued anytime, they added.
"We want to see how commuters respond to the new revised rate and how the operators provide service," Road Division Secretary MAN Siddique told the FE at his office.
He said further revision of the taxi fares might come after evaluation of the response of commuters and service to be provided by the operators who were awarded the job.
The ministry officials, however, said the notification on the new taxi fares would come after the Prime Minister's inauguration as she might propose further change in the rate.
