Wednesday, 22 July 2009

The timing of Moitree Express on Dhaka-Kolkata route is likely to be changed from August 1, reports UNB.
According to the new timing, the train from Dhaka will start its journey at 8:35 am Tuesday and it will reach Kolkata at 6:45 pm (Indian local time). The same train will start its return journey from Kolkata Wednesday at 7:10 am (Indian local time) and will arrive at Dhaka the same evening at 7:45.
The train from Kolkata will start at 7:10 am (Indian local time) Saturday and will arrive in the city the same evening at 7:45 while the same train will start its return journey from Dhaka at 8:35 am Sunday and will reach Kolkata the same evening at 6:45 (Indian local time).
The Moitree Express now starts its journey from Dhaka at 9:30 am Saturdays and Sundays while the departure timing from Kolkata is 8:30 am Saturdays and Sundays.
The decision for the change in timing was taken on July 8 at an inter-ministerial meeting at the Communications Ministry.
The meeting also decided to carry out the customs and immigration formalities for the Kolkata-bound passengers at Kamalapur or Cantonment stations. The customs and immigration for the passengers travelling from Kolkata will be held at the arrival point.
It asked the IRD and NBR to submit a proposal within 15 days from July 8 to the Roads and Railway Division after taking into consideration if on-board checking could be introduced to reduce the time and hassle for the passengers.
At present, the customs and immigration formalities take more than three hours at the checking points.
The passengers, who travel by the Moitree Express, complain about the time-consuming process of the customs and immigration in Bangladesh and Indian points.
The meeting decided that the Foreign Ministry send a letter requesting the Indian High Commission to make the visa issuing process easier and to open a separate counter for the passengers of Moitree Express.
The meeting also asked the Bangladesh Railway to send a letter requesting the Indian Railways to introduce on-board checking from their part as soon as possible.
The trans-border Moitree Express train began its run from the Dhaka Cantonment station on April 14, 2008.
