The world civil society organizations at the Cancun Conference have demanded new UN Protocol for climate induced migrants.
International civil society leaders demanded new UN protocol for climate forced migrants and claimed for a declaration for the climate refugees as "Universal Natural Person" Monday (Tuesday, according to Bangladesh time) on the UNFCCC official premises in Cancun through a conference.
The speakers expressed their deep concern that above 200 to 250 million would be forced to become climate refugees.
"About one out of 45 of global population and about 3 out of 5 in Bangladesh would be climate-forced migrants by the year 2050", the speakers predicted.
They said that country like Guiana or the Maldives would lose their total population.
Claiming that the developed countries are most responsible for the catastrophes, the speakers said, the countries have to accept historical responsibility and the preparation for climate debt.
Especially the developed or climate offenders must take the responsibilities for relocating the climate migrants.
The conference titled "Climate Induced Migrants: Need of New UN Protocol" held at Aguila Auditorium, was organised by EquityBD jointly with CSRL, Jubilee South, LDC Watch, SAAPE and Shaptahik.
Foreign Secretary of Bangladesh Mizarul Kayes, Executive Director of Green Peace International Kumi Naido, Campaign for Sustainable Rural Livelihood (CSRL) representative and Bangladeshi environment specialist Dr. Ahsan Uddin, Secretary General of Asia Pacific Research Network Maria Lauren Theresa, Dorothy Gurrera of Focus on Global South, Kate Blogejenic of World Development Movement and Abdul Awal of SUPRO, among others, raised their voice at the conference.
