TANGAIL, Mar 29: Newly-harvested wheat has started appearing in the local market of the district.
Sources said wheat cultivators of the district have already started harvesting the produce recently. They are also delighted over the production and the present price of the item.
Wheat is being sold at Tk 850 to Tk 1350 per maund in the market as per quality. Most of the traders purchase the produce from the growers directly, sources added.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Tangail, around 5,740 hectares of land have been brought under the farming of the crop with the production target of 18,691 tonnes.
"I have cultivated wheat on 64 decimals of land spending Tk 16,000 and got some 35 maund of yield", said Hazrat Ali of Gomjani village under Delduar upazila. The grower expects a good yield this season.
Another farmer Asgar Miah said he got 12 maunds of wheat from 25 decimals of land.
"There was no any shortage of fertiliser and insecticide or any other inputs in the district this season. Local agri department provided all necessary support", the cultivator said.
Deputy Director of DAE, Tangail, Abdur Razzak said, "We encourage the peasants to grow the crop on more land. Wheat has a high market demand so its cultivation is profitable."
