Thursday, 27 March 2014

The husband of a newly married woman has complained to police that her wife was raped by the family members of a union parishad chairman keeping him tied at his home. The incident occurred on Tuesday at Laxmikhali village of Zeudhara union parishad at Morelgoanj upazila in Bagerhat district, according to a case filed by the woman’s husband. In the case filed on Wednesday the man named six family members of Zeudhara union parishad chairman and local Awami League leader Habibur Rahman. His eldest son Hasibur Rahman, youngest son Sazibur Rahman, brother Faridur Rahman, nephews Mizanur Rahman, Chayan Hawladar and grandson Habibur Rahman Sheikh. The case said four other unidentified men from outside Habibur Rahman’s family also took part with the gang. Habibur dismissed the allegation as false. He told UNB that it was linked to factional feuds in local Awami League. The woman was taken to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital where she received treatment until Thursday. From the hospital she was sent to the Chief Judicial Magistrates’ court for her statement under section 22 of The Prevention of Oppression Against Women and Children Act 2000, said Morelganj police station operation-in-charge Abdur Rakib Khan. Bagerhat Sadar Hospital resident medical officer Moin Uddin Mollah said the victim has undergone several medical tests at the hospital. The final report will be given by a medical board on Sunday.
