RAJSHAHI, Apr 21: On the first day of inauguration of the repaired road at Daigpara crossing under Godagari upazila on Chapainawabganj-Rajshahi highway, more than 20 metre of it gave in by creating more than two feet of caves and potholes around 11.00 am on Sunday.
Though the works of repairing was supposed to perform with concrete, the contractor used very low quality materials for the repairing works resulting in the mess on the road.
Local people have demanded to take punitive measures against the contruction farm and the concerned engineer of the department of Roads and Highways.
According to sources, construction farm Messers Ali Enterprise of Rajshahi got the work order of R&H of repairing the road at Dangpara crossing of Godagari at a cost of Tk 6.7 million (67 lakh). Due to excessive movement of vehicles at the upazila crossing at Daingpara, 400 metres of adjacent road was repaired by using concrete.
After repairing the road over long two months, it was opened to traffic on Sunday morning. But within one hour of starting of traffic movement, some 20-metres of roads caved in two feet deep.
Rabiul Islam, Executive Engineer of R&H, Rajshahi, himself was supervising the repairing work.
Some shop owners at Daingpara informed, from the very first day of starting the repairing works of the road, the concerned contractor was using very low quality construction materials. As a result, some of them protested the work and even stopped the on going works several times.
But, due to a mysterious reason, XEN of R&H Rabiul Islam supported the contractor and threatened to file case against the shop keepers protesting the work. As a result, the contruction farm finished the work by using low quality materials.
Meanwhile, XEN of R&H Rabiul Islam refused to comment on the use of low quality construction materials in repairing the road and said, he was not aware of the fact that the repaired road gave in at the first day of inauguration.
