12 shops gutted in Faridpur market fire
FARIDPUR, July 02: At least 12 shops, mostly fruit and sweetmeat outlets, were gutted in a fire at Bhanga Upazila Sadar Bazar of Faridpur on Saturday morning. Officials said that the fire broke out at a shop at the bazar around 5.30am and it soon engulfed the adjoining shops. Several fire tenders were pressed into service and it took them over four hours to douse the flames. Abu Jafar, station officer of Bhanga Fire Station, said an electric short-circuit at the first shop might have triggered the fire. The amount of loss caused by the fire could not be ascertained immediately, he said. — UNB
Man held with drugs in Teknaf
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has claimed to have detained a man and seized over 1kg of crystal methamphetamine and 50,000 Yaba pills in separate drives across Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar. The detainee has been identified as Md Faruk, 30, son of Nur Ahmed of the upazila. Tipped off, a BGB-2 team intercepted a boat coming from Myanmar in the Naf river at 6.30pm on Friday and detained Faruk as he tried to escape, the force said in a release. While the BGB men seized 30,000 pieces of Yaba tablets worth Tk 9 million (90 lakh) from his possession, a subsequent drive in the Hinla Abrang area led to the seizure of 1.06 kg of crystal methamphetamine worth Tk 59 million (5.90 crore) and 20,000 pieces of Yaba tablets. — UNB
Sewing machines distributed in Jhenaidah
JHENAIDAH, July 02: Sewing machines were distributed among trained young women in the town on Saturday. A function was held at the district Department of Youth Development office this morning on the occasion. Deputy Commissioner Monira Begum, Deputy Director at Department of Youth Development Shahidul Islam, Rotarian A Q Siddique and Samsul Alam were present. As many as 28 young women from different upazilas of the district got sewing machines in the function. — BSS
One held with two firearms, ammunition
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained a man along with two illegal firearms and ammunition from Satkhira border early Saturday. The arrestee was identified as Md Badruzzaman, 34, son of Dabir Uddin of village Uttar Vadiali under Kalaroa police station in Satkhira district. Sources at the BGB headquarters here on Saturday said based on secret information, a special patrol team of BGB) conducted anti-smuggling drives at Uttarar Vadiali, 500 yards inside Bangladesh territory from Satkhira border at around 00:45 am. — UNB
