14 passengers die in Bolivia bus accident
LA PAZ, Aug 06: At least 14 people were killed and 21 others injured when a passenger bus plummeted 200 meters into a ravine around midnight Sunday in Bolivia, local authorities reported on Monday. The accident occurred near the town of Charazani, 251 km to the north of La Paz, according to preliminary information, said Osvaldo Fuentes, director of public transit of El Alto, Bolivia's second-largest city. "Among the dead, 11 were women and three were men," Fuentes told local media. — AP
British Airways evacuates flight after filling with smoke
MADRID, Aug 06: Spanish emergency services say they have responded to a British Airways flight that filled with smoke while landing and had to evacuate its passengers. News agency Europa Press said Monday that local government officials reported that three people have been treated for smoke inhalation and another 10 to 12 were treated for knocks received when they slid down inflatable emergency slides after arriving at the airport in the eastern city of Valencia. — AP
Five wounded in Canadian nightclub shooting
TORONTO, Aug 06: Police in Canada say five people have been wounded during a shooting inside a Toronto nightclub. Police spokeswoman Const. Allyson Douglas-Cook said one man is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after the incident early Monday morning. Four other victims are in non-life threatening condition. — AP
No casualties reported following quakes in Taiwan
TAIPEI, Aug 06: No casualties have been reported so far after two earthquakes, measuring 4.9 and 4.5 respectively on the Richter scale, hit the coastal waters of Hualien County, eastern Taiwan on Tuesday. Tremors were felt in many parts of Taiwan when the earthquakes hit. A 4.9-magnitude earthquake jolted waters off Hualien at 9:19 a.m., followed by a 4.5-magnitude earthquake 12 minutes later, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center. — AP
Thai army destroys thousands of landmines
SA KAEO, Aug 06: Pulling back to a safe distance atop a hill, Thai troops blew up thousands of anti-personnel landmines on Tuesday with controlled explosions that sent black plumes of smoke high above jungle treetops. Thailand is one of more than 160 countries to have signed the Ottawa Treaty, which prohibits the use and stockpiling of the destructive weapon and aims to clear all mines by 2025. — AFP
Heavy rain leaves six dead in Hubei province
WUHAN, Aug 06: Six people have been killed and six others remain missing amid heavy downpours and floods in central China's Hubei Province, local authorities said on Tuesday. Heavy rain hit Yunyang District in the city of Shiyan at around 4:00 a.m. Tuesday, causing flash floods in a local village. — Xinhua
