Lightning strike kills two in Sunamganj haor
SUNAMGANJ, Apr 23: Two farmers were killed by lightning strike while working in a Haor at Dhitpur village in Dirai upazila Friday afternoon. The deceased were identified as Rabindra Das, 55 and Tipu Das, 25 of the village. The two farmers died on the spot when a streak of thunderbolt struck them while they were covering their harvested paddy at Dabhanga Haor around 5:30 pm, said Ekbar Hossain, chairman of Kulonja Union. —UNB
DMP arrests 48 for consuming, selling drugs
As part of the anti-drug campaign in the capital, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested a total of 48 people on charges of selling and consuming drugs during last 24 hours till 6am on Saturday. According to a press release issued by the DMP, police conducted the operations against drug sellers and consumers in different areas under various police stations and apprehended 48 drug traffickers and recovered huge narcotics from their possession. During the anti-drug drive, police seized 60 grams of heroin, 55.930 kilograms of cannabis (ganja), 1,061 piece of yaba tablets and 45,000 sedative tablets from them, it said. Police filed 36 cases against the arrestees with respective police stations under the Narcotics Control Act. — BSS
Two alleged drug peddlers held with ganja in Natore
RAJSHAHI, Apr 23: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), in an anti-crime operation, arrested two alleged drug peddlers with 50 kilograms of ganja from a place in Natore district early on Saturday morning. The arrested were identified as Muhammad Zilani, 24, son of Abul Khayer of Gakulnagar village and Anish Mian, 38, son of late Shah Alam of Bhangra village under Muradnagar upazila in Cumilla district, RAB sources said on Saturday noon. On a tip-off, a team of the elite force conducted a raid in Jamtali Bazar area on the Natore-Bogura highway under Singra upazila around 5:10 am and arrested them with the huge hemp after searching a truck, the sources added. Besides, the RAB team also seized the vehicle. Later, the arrested with the seized contraband goods and the truck was handed over to the police Saturday. A case was filed with Singra Police Station in this connection. — BSS
