Teen tied to tree, beaten up in Cumilla
CUMILLA, May 07: A 14-year-old boy was allegedly tied to a tree and beaten up on Friday by some locals in Cumilla -- just for Tk 450 that his father owed to a furniture shop owner. In his complaint to the local police station, the boy's father alleged that he purchased a wooden cot from the shop owned by a man named Nahidul in Burichang upazila a few days ago. "I have cleared almost all the dues. Only Tk 450 was outstanding. On the Eid, Nahidul's brothers Nazmul and Jashim abducted my son at gunpoint and tortured him," he said. Police said that action would be taken, following a probe. "Investigation is on," said sub-inspector of Burichang police station, Sharif Rahman. — UNB
Three ferry owners fined for overloading
BARISHAL, May 07: A mobile court in Barishal imposed a penalty of Tk 30,000 on three ferry owners for carrying passengers beyond the permitted capacity on Friday. Joint director of Bangladesh Inland and Water Transport Authority, Mostafizur Rahman, said the mobile court conducted a drive in the Barishal port area around 7.30pm and imposed a fine of Tk 10,000 each on the owners of MV Parabat-18, Parabat-10 and MV Surovi-9 for overloading. The mobile court was led by executive magistrate Mushfiqur Rahman and assistant commissioner (land) Tariqul Islam, he added. — UNB
DMP arrests 22 for selling, consuming drugs
The members of the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in several anti-drug raids arrested a total of 22 people on charges of selling and consuming drugs during the last 24 hours till 6am on Saturday. The DB in association with local police carried out the drives simultaneously at different parts of the metropolis from 6am of May 06, according to a DMP release. In separate anti-drug raids, police seized huge drugs from their possessions. During the anti-drug raids, police seized 10 grams and 54 puria (small packet) of heroin, 1.25 kilograms of cannabis (ganja), 230 pieces of contraband Yaba tablets and 30 bottles of Phensidyle syrup from their possessions, the release added. Police filed 18 separate cases against the arrestees in these connections with respective police stations under the Narcotics Control Act. — BSS
Man held with 63kg hemp
FARIDPUR, May 07: Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested a youth with 63kg hemp in Faridpur on Friday night. The arrestee was identified as Ripan Ali, 28, a resident of Baradi village of Meherpur. RAB also seized a truck, three mobile phones, and four SIM cards from his possession. According to a press release, the elite force led by deputy assistant director Rafiqul Islam of RAB-8, Faridpur camp, detained the shipment of hemp by setting up a check post in front of Karimpur Highway Police Camp on Magura-Faridpur highway. Ripan Ali, later was handed over to police and a narcotic case was filed with Kotwali police station, added the RAB official. — UNB
