Tibet Airlines plane catches fire
BEIJING, May 12: A Tibet Airlines plane caught fire on Thursday at a Chinese airport after veering off the runway, but all passengers and crew were "safely evacuated", the airline said. The flight, carrying 113 passengers and nine crew, was headed from the southwestern city of Chongqing to Tibet's Nyingchi when crew noticed "abnormalities" and "suspended take off", causing the jet to overrun the runway and catch fire, the company said in a statement. — AFP
Iraqi soldiers kill nine IS militants
BAGHDAD, May 12: Iraqi soldiers killed nine militants of the Islamic State on Wednesday during an operation in the northern province of Kirkuk, the Iraqi military said. Iraqi soldiers surrounded nine militants holed up in a tunnel in Kraw Mountain there, some 250 km north of Baghdad, bombed the tunnel and killed all the militants inside, the media office of the Iraqi Joint Operations Command said in a statement. — Xinhua
One dies in Russian military base blast
MOSCOW, May 12: One person died and several others were injured in an explosion that took place while ammunition was unloaded at a military base in Russia's Far East, Russian news agency TASS reported Thursday. Accidents at arms depots are fairly common in Russia, especially due to lax safety requirements and large amounts of old munitions remaining in storage.
