Rohingya girl arrested for faking identity
CHATTOGRAM, May 24: A 15-year-old Rohingya girl was held at the Chattogram passport office while applying for a Bangladeshi passport with a fake identity. Juraira Bibi, daughter of Mostaq Ahmed, was caught after her fingerprint was scanned. She was detained by the officials of Mansurabad Passport Office on Monday afternoon and later handed over to Double Mooring Police Station. Confirming the matter, Assistant Director of Chattogram Divisional Passport and Visa Office Mahmudul Haque said the Rohingya girl submitted her passport application in the name of Zobaida Khanam showing the address of Salimpur in Sitakunda. Officers there doubted her identity. Later, her fingerprints showed that she was Juraira Bibi and registered as a resident of the Rohingya camp, he said. — UNB
House tutor held for trying to rape 9-yr-old girl
FENI, May 23 (UNB): Police arrested a man for trying to rape a nine-year-old girl whom he tutored at her home in Parshuram upazila of Feni. The arrestee was identified as Md Afaz Uddin, 24, Imam of a local mosque and son of Abu Bakkar from Mirzanagr union. On Sunday evening, Afaz went to the victim's house to teach her Arabic like every day and tried to rape her when her mother went out of sight, said Saiful Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Parshuram police station. Hearing the girl's cries her mother rushed to the room and caught him during the crime. The girl's mother called national emergency service number 999 with the help of neighbours and police members from Parshuram police station detained the accused. Later, a case was filed at Parshuram police station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act following a complaint from the victim's mother, said the OC. On Monday, the accused was sent to jail after police produced him before court. The victim's statement has been recorded by Feni Senior Judicial Magistrate Fatema Tuj Johra, said the OC. — UNB
DMP arrests 85 for selling, consuming drugs
The members of the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in several anti-drug raids arrested a total of 85 people on charges of selling and consuming drugs during the last 24 hours till 6am on Tuesday. The DB in association with local police carried out the drives simultaneously at different parts of the metropolis from 6am of May 23, according to a DMP release. In the raids, police seized huge drugs from their possessions. During the anti-drug raids, police seized 64 grams and 76 puria (small packets) of heroin, 19.290 kilograms of cannabis (ganja), 1,404 pieces of contraband Yaba tablets and 460 bottles of Phensidyle syrup from their possessions, the release added. Police filed 59 separate cases against the arrestees in these connections with respective police stations under the Narcotics Control Act. — BSS
