Woman hacked to death in Joypurhat
JOYPURHAT, May 28 (UNB): A 44-year-old woman has been hacked to death in Kalai upazila of Joypurhat district. The deceased was identified as Shipan Akhter, wife of Tojam Sarker of Duhil-Napara village of the upazila. Police said that Tojam found her wife's throat-slit body in her room Saturday morning and informed police. Locals suspected that she might have been killed following previous enmity over a piece of land. Officer-in-Charge of Kalai Police Station Moinul Hossain said that the body was sent to Joypurhat District Hospital for autopsy. Those involved in the murder would be identified and arrested soon, he said.

8-ft python rescued from paddy field
LALMONIRHAT, May 28 (UNB): "Farmers rescued an eight-feet long python from a paddy field in Hatibandha upazila of Lalmonirhat district on Saturday", said the district administration. The snake was rescued at noon from a field in the Mothergor area in the upazila, said Dr Motaharul Islam, upazila livestock officer. Habibur Rahman, a local farmer, found the python in his field while harvesting paddy and rescued it with the help of other farmers. "The python has been kept under the custody of Nowdabas Union Parishad for now", said Dr Motaharul Islam. Nazir Hossain, Upazila Nirbahi Officer, said, "We immediately sent police to the spot when we received the information. The snake has been rescued and forest department officials will release it later into Shal forest." — UNB
Two drug peddlers held in city
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has claimed to have nabbed two drug peddlers with over 350 bottles of Phensedyl from the capital's Jatrabari area. The arrestees have been identified as Md Jewel, 36, and Md Sakhawat Hossain, 32. On a tip-off from the intelligence wing, a RAB-3 team set up a couple of checkposts in the Jatrabari area on Friday night and managed to nab the peddlers travelling in a car around 10.30pm. As many as 353 bottles of Phensedyl and their car have been seized, the RAB said in a release on Saturday. During initial interrogation, the duo admitted to their involvement in drug peddling. "They used to source Phensidyl from Cumilla and sold the same across Dhaka," said Beena Rani Das, RAB assistant director (operations and intelligence branch). A case has been filed against the arrestees at the Jatrabari police station, she added. — UNB
