63-year-old man commits suicide
CHAPAINAWABGANJ, May 31: A 63-year-old man from Gomastapur upazila of C'nawabganj district committed suicide by shooting himself on Tuesday morning, police said. The victim was identified as Sharif Hossain, son of late Yahia of Deopura village of the upazila. Officer-in-charge (OC) of Gomastapur Police Station Dilip Kumar Das said Sharif used to live with his family on the second floor of his house. He shot himself in the head with his licensed gun in his bedroom around 11.30am on Tuesday. His family members found Sharif's body in his room and informed the police. On information, police recovered the body and sent it to the district hospital morgue for an autopsy, the OC added. Family members said that Sharif Hossain was frustrated about his life. However, police or family members could hardly venture even a guess as to why Sharif would choose this path. Police are investigating the incident, he added.

Trader stabbed to death in Narail
NARAIL, May 31: A 55-year-old trader was stabbed to death allegedly by his rivals in Telkara village of the district's Lohagara upazila on Monday night. The deceased was identified as Nizam Sheikh, son of Peta Sheikh of the village. He was a vegetable vendor in Baradia Bazar. Police suspect the murder was a fallout of an old rivalry between two groups of villagers over establishing supremacy. Around 9pm on Monday, a group of assailants attacked Nizam and stabbed him indiscriminately, leaving him dead on spot, said Sheikh Abu Hena Milon, officer-in-charge of Lohagara police station. The body has been kept at the morgue of the local government hospital for an autopsy. "Efforts are on to nab the culprits," said the officer. —UNB
24 illegal shops evicted in Ctg
CHATTOGRAM, May 31: The Chattogram District Administration in a drive on Tuesday evicted a total of 24 unauthorized shops built in Satkania Municipality area. Nurjahan Akter Swati, Executive Magistrate of the district administration led the drive in association with police and officials of the Chattogram Zila Parishad. "We have evicted a total of 24 semi-pucca shops and establishments built on government land from Dighirpar area of Satkania Municipal area," Fatema Tuj Johora, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Satkania Upazila said. —BSS
DMP arrests 55 for consuming, selling drugs
As part of the anti-drug campaign in the capital, members of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested a total of 55 people on charges of selling and consuming drugs during last 24 hours till 6am on Tuesday. According to a release issued by the DMP, police conducted the operations against the drug sellers and consumers in different areas under various police stations and detained 55 drug traffickers and recovered huge drugs from their possessions from 6am of May 30 to 6 am on Tuesday. During the anti-drug drives, police seized 223 grams of heroin, 5.100 kilograms of cannabis (ganja) 21,238 pieces of yaba tablets and 24 bottles of phensidyle syrup from them, it said. Police filed 42 cases against the arrestees in these connections with respective police stations under the Narcotics Control Act. — BSS
