30 houses gutted in Gazipur fire
GAZIPUR, June 18: Thirty houses of two colonies were gutted in a fire in the Chandra area of Kaliakoir upazila of Gazipur district on Saturday. Saiful Islam, in-charge of Kaliakoir Fire Service, said, "The fire originated from an electric short circuit gutted the houses in the morning". On information, two firefighting units rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze after one and one and half hours of frantic efforts. No causalities were reported, he said. — UNB
DMP arrests 41 for selling, consuming drugs
Members of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in several anti-drug raids arrested a total of 41 people on charges of selling and consuming drugs during the last 24 hours till 6am Saturday. The DB in association with local police carried out the drives simultaneously at different parts of the metropolis from 6am of June 17, according to a DMP release. During the anti-drug raids, police seized six gram and 85 puria (small packet) of heroin, 13.55 kilograms of cannabis (ganja), 4,950 pieces of contraband Yaba tablets and 343 bottles of Phensidyl from their possessions, the release added. Police filed 31 separate cases against the arrestees in these connections with respective police stations under the Narcotics Control Act. — BSS
Youth held with crystal meth in Madaripur
MADARIPUR, June 18: Members of Rapid Action Battalion in a drive arrested a youth with drug crystal meth (ice) from Kalkini Upazila of the district on Friday night. The arrested was identified as Sayed Sarker, 19, hailed from Madaripur Sadar Upazila. Company commander of RAB-8 Mohammad Sadequl Islam said in a press release on Saturday morning. He said, being informed, a team of the elite force conducted a raid in Lakshmipur area in Kalkini municipality and held Sayed with the crystal meth that stimulates brain and nervous system. Ice is highly addictive. A case was filed under the Narcotics Control Act. — BSS
