Nurse dies falling off city building
A male nurse died after falling off the rooftop of a four-storey building in the city's Sabujbagh area on Saturday. The deceased was Ataul Karim Apu, 50, a nursing staff of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), said Firoza Parvin, a senior staff nurse of DMCH. Apu slipped on the wet floor and fell down around 06:30 am when he went to the rooftop of his house for physical exercise. He was rescued by neighbours and taken to DMCH in a critical condition where the doctors announced him dead, said inspector Bacchu Mia, in-charge of DMCH police outpost. — UNB

Lightning strike kills farmer in Dinajpur
Dinajpur, Aug 06: A 38-year-old farmer died after being struck by lightning in Krishtapur village of Dinajpur's Nababganj upazila on Saturday. The deceased was identified as Robin Saren, son of Babu Ram Soren of the village. Rashedul Kabir Raju, chairman of Golapganj union, said Robin was struck by lightning while working on his farmland this morning. He died on the way to a local hospital. At least 216 people die every year on an average in lightning strikes, more than by floods, cyclones and other calamities. — UNB

Dhaka's air quality improves
Dhaka's air quality has seen a marked improvement in the past 24 hours, thanks to intermittent monsoon showers. With an air quality index (AQI) score of 98 or 'moderate' at 09:00 am on Saturday, the metropolis ranked 10th in the list of world cities with the worst air quality. Saudi Arabia's Riyadh, the United Arab Emirates' Dubai and Pakistan's Lahore occupied the first three spots in the list, with AQI scores of 170, 160 and 156, respectively. An AQI between 50 and 100 is considered 'moderate' with an acceptable air quality. However, there may be a moderate health concern for a very small number of people who are unusually sensitive to air pollution. — UNB

Seven burnt in city warehouse blast
At least seven people were received burn injuries following an explosion at a hand sanitizer godown in Rajabari area of Kamarpara in the city on Saturday. The injured were identified rickshaw garage owner Gazi Mazharul Islam, 48, Md Mizan,35, Md Nur Hossain,60, Md Alam Mia 20, Masum, 35, Md Al-Amin,30 and Md Shaheen, 25. Officer-in-Charge of Torag Police Station Mehedi Hasan told that the blast occurred at around 11:45 am in a godown of hand sanitizer, leaving the seven people wounded. Local people rescued them and rushed to emergency department at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, he said. — UNB
