BGB man stabbed to death in Magura
A clash between two groups in Magura's Sreepur upazila on Tuesday night left one person dead and several others injured. The victim is Rashedul Islam (55), son of Kawsar Mollah of Hogoldanga village. He was a member of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). However, the identities of the injured are yet to be ascertained. Shukdev Roy, officer-in-charge of Sreepur thana, said supporters of Hannan Mollah and Paban Mollah of Kajli village had long been at loggerheads over voting in the last elections. As a sequel to their long rivalry, followers of Paban Mollah attacked members of Hannan Mollah's group with sharp weapons around 8.30pm, leaving them injured. They were rushed to Magura Sadar Hospital where doctors declared Rashedul dead on arrival. On information, police recovered the body and sent it to the hospital morgue for an autopsy. A case was filed with Sreepur thana, said the OC, adding that additional police forces have been deployed in the area to avert further trouble. — UNB
Jeweller found dead in Chattogram
A 43-year-old jewellery shop owner was found dead in the Larihara area of Chattogram's Patia upazila early on Wednesday, police said. The dead, Biman Dhar, was the owner of a jewellery shop in Raharttarpool of Chattogram city and son of Dulal Dhar of the upazila. Being informed by local people, police recovered the throat-slit body of Biman and sent it to Chattogram Medical College and Hospital morgue for an autopsy, said Tarique Rahman, additional police superintendent of Patia Circle. Police suspect miscreants killed him when he was returning home from his store, he said. Police also seized a motorbike and a sharp weapon from the spot. "Investigation is on to unearth the motive behind the killing and nab the killers," said Tarique. — UNB
Kushtia filling station fire: Death toll rises to 5
The death toll from the deadly fire at a filing station in Kushtia's Bheramara upazila rose to five, with another victim succumbing to his burn injuries at a hospital in Dhaka on Wednesday. The dead is Md Bidyut Hossain (25), who worked as an accountant at the fuel pump and a resident of the Porankhali area of the upazila. Bidyut, who sustained only 17 per cent burn injuries in the fire, died at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in the early hours of Wednesday, said Mojibur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Bheramara thana. Earlier on August 18, another worker Rimon succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. On August 12, the fire broke out at Dafadar Filling Station in the Mahishdoba area around 7.30 pm while unloading of fuel from an oil tanker. — UNB
