Tidal surges likely to inundate
low-lying areas of coastal districts
Low-lying areas of coastal districts and their offshore islands and chars are likely to be inundated by tidal surges, the weather department said on Sunday. The districts are Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat, Jahalakathi, Pirojpur, Barguna, Patuakhali, Bhola, Barishal, Laxmipur, Chandpur, Noakhali, Feni, Chattogram and Cox's Bazar. Meanwhile, the well-marked low over west-central Bay and adjoining northeast Bay intensified into a depression and lies over coastal Odisha and adjoining Northwest Bay. "It is likely to move west-northwestwards further," according to a special bulletin. — UNB
Businessman shot dead in Rajbari
Miscreants gunned down a businessman at a tea stall in Sadar upazila of the district on Saturday evening, police said. The dead, Ariful Islam (25), is son of Abdur Razzak of Khankhanapur's Sardarpara in the upazila and poultry businessman. Local Abul Kalam said Ariful was sitting on a bench at a tea stall in front of Suraj Mohini Institute High School nearby Khankhanapur Union Parishad around 6:00 pm. A group of miscreants on two motorbikes from Khankhanapur Bazar shot him dead, he said. He sustained bullet injuries in the head and chest causing immense bleeding, local Kalam depicted. Shawkat Hasan, inspector of Khankhanapur police investigation centre, said they have been working to unearth the reason behind the murder and identify the killers. — UNB
Poultry trader stabbed dead in Ctg
A poultry trader was stabbed to death by some unidentified miscreants in Fatikchhari upazila of Chattogram on Saturday night, police said. The dead is Md Yusuf (38), son of Abul Kalam of Hasnabad area under Bhujpur thana in the upazila. Family members said Yusuf went out of house to guard his poultry and fish farms around 11:00 pm on Saturday. His wife found his body lying beside the fishery project on Sunday morning. Helal Uddin Faruque, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bhujpur thana, said on information they recovered the bloodstained body from the spot. The body was sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy, he said adding that the reason behind the death will be known following the postmortem. "However, primarily we suspect that he was stabbed to death as the body bore some marks of stab injury," the OC added. — UNB
