Volunteer guard killed in attack at Rohingya refugee camp
A volunteer guard at a Rohingya refugee camp in Cox's Bazar's Ukhiya has been shot and hacked to death by a group of assailants. The incident occurred at the H-51 Block of the Moynarghona-18 Rohingya camp at 3:30 am on Wednesday, according to Assistant Superintendent of Police Md Faruk Ahmed of the Eighth Armed Police Battalion. The victim is Mohammad Jafar (35), a Rohingya man. "Jafar and a few others were voluntarily guarding the entrance to the H-Block early on Wednesday when about 20-25 Rohingya criminals fired at them from the direction of Camp-17," said ASP Faruk. "At one point the criminals attacked Jafar with sharp weapons, injuring him on the head, shoulders, hands and legs. Once the criminals confirmed that Jafar was dead, they fled the scene." The body was recovered from the scene and sent to the Ukhiya thana, Faruk said. It has been sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital for an autopsy. The family of the victim, with support from the APBn, are preparing to file a case over the incident. Patrols at the camp have been stepped up following the incident, ASP Faruk said. An operation is underway to identify and arrest the attackers. Three volunteers and two camp management leaders have been killed at the camp in the past three months in similar ways.

Three bodies fished out of Brahmaputra over Kishoreganj boat capsize

The bodies of three people, who went missing after a boat capsized in the Brahmaputra river two days ago, were fished out on Wednesday. The dead are Shamim Mia (30), son of Kitab Ali of Tarpasha village, Md Sifat (16), son of Abdus Samad, and Yeasin (7), son of Monir Hossain of Mymensingh district. Asaduzzaman Titu, inspector at Hossainpur thana, said local people spotted the bodies of the trio floating in the river under the Dane bridge at 6:00 am and informed cops. Later, drivers from the local fire service recovered their bodies. The trio met the watery grave while going to Kishoreganj to see the historical boat race on September 19. — UNB

Two cousins drown in Nilphamari
Two cousins drown in a ditch at Shonakhuli village in Saidpur upazila of Nilphamari on Wednesday. The dead are Tuhin (3) and Shajid (3), residents of the same village. Local people said Tuhin and Shajid drowned around 11:00 am playing beside a ditch full of water. Locals recovered their floating bodies after searching the ditch. Officer-in-charge of Saidpur thana Md Saiful Islam confirmed. — BSS
