Man killed by cousins over land dispute
JHENAIDAH, Oct 15: A man was beaten to death by his cousins over a land dispute in Khalkula village under Jhenaidah's Shailkupa upazila on Friday. The deceased has been identified as Amzad Hossain, 50, son of Hossain Ali of the village. According to the relatives of the deceased, Amzad was at loggerheads with his cousins over a piece of land for a very long time. He was severely beaten when he went to the contentious patch of land on Thursday morning. Locals rushed Amzad Hossain to Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex, from where he was later shifted to Kushtia General Hospital due to deteriorating health condition. Amzad breathed his last at the hospital while undergoing treatment. "The accused are currently on the run. Efforts are on to nab the killers," said Aminul Islam, Officer In-charge (OC) of Shailkupa Police Station. — UNB
Cop's wife found dead in Khulna
KHULNA, Oct 15 (UNB): A constable's wife was found dead in their house at Jogipole in Khulna district town on Friday night. Police suspect Mahmuda Khatun Tumpa, 30, wife of Shakil Ahmed, the constable posted in Khulna court, died by suicide. The couple lived with their two children. Kamal Hossain Khan, officer-in-charge of Khanjahan Ali Police Station, said that Shakil was the first to spot his wife's body hanging from the ceiling of their bedroom. "After finishing his duty around 9.30pm, Shakil returned home but he found the bedroom of their house locked from inside," he said. "Getting no response from his wife from inside, Shakil told us that he broke open the door and found Mahmuda hanging from the ceiling," he said. On information, police recovered the body and sent it to the local hospital morgue for an autopsy. — UNB
Gold worth Tk 35m seized at Benapole
BENAPOLE, Oct 15 (UNB): Members of Border Guard Bangladesh seized 43 gold bars weighing a combined 5kg from the Agravulot border of Jashore's Sharsha upazila on Friday. Lt Col Tanveer Ahmed, commanding officer of BGB-21 battalion, said tipped off, a team of BGB conducted a drive in the area around 9pm, acting on a tip-off that gold was being smuggled to India. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, smugglers fled the scene leaving behind a bag and the BGB team recovered the gold bars worth Tk 35 million (3.5 crore) from the bag, said Tanveer Ahmed. — UNB
Woman held with 2.75-kg heroin

RAJSHAHI, Oct 15: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in an anti-crime drive arrested an alleged woman drug peddler with 2.75 kilograms of heroin from a frontier village in Chapainawabganj district on Friday night. The arrested female was identified as Morjina Khatun, 25, wife of Abdus Samad of Kodalkati village under Chapainawabganj Sadar upazila. On a tip-off, a team of the elite force conducted a raid in the house of the arrested woman at around 8:30 pm and seized the huge contraband drug item after searching the house. — BSS
