Couple electrocuted in Chandpur
CHANDPUR, June 03: A couple died after being electrocuted at Miji Bari in Chandpur's Hajiganj upazila on Friday at noon. The deceased were identified as Haji Md. Momin Miji, 70, and his wife Nurjahan Begum, 60, of the area. Golam Mostafa Swapan, chairman of local union parishad, said that Momin Miji kept pigeons at home. As the baby pigeon was repeatedly eaten by the cat, he apparently surrounded the pigeon's coop with electric wire to protect the baby pigeon from cats. Around 12:30 pm, Monin Miji got an electric shock when he went there to see the baby pigeons. As his wife came to his rescue, she was also electrocuted, the chairman said. They were rushed to the Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared them dead. As there was no complaint from the family, we allowed the burial of the bodies without any autopsy, said Mohammad Zobair Syed, officer-in-charge of Hajiganj police station. — UNB
DMP arrests 32 for selling, consuming drugs
The members of the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in several anti-drug raids arrested a total of 32 people on charges of selling and consuming drugs during the last 24 hours till 6 am on Saturday. The DB in association with local police carried out the drives simultaneously at different parts of the metropolis from 6am of June 2 to 6am on Saturday, according to a DMP release. In those separate anti-drug raids, police seized huge drugs from their possessions. During the anti-drug raids, police seized 2,671 pieces of contraband yaba tablets, 374 grams of heroin, 3.575 kilograms of cannabis (ganja) and 5 litres of locally made liquor from their possessions, the release added. Police filed 23 separate cases against the arrestees in these connections with respective police stations under the Narcotics Control Act. — BSS
Journalists' training on 'Child Drowning' begins
NETRAKONA, June 03: A two-day basic training on "Child Drowning" for the working journalists began in Netrakona district on Saturday. Society for Media and Suitable Human-Communication Techniques (SoMaSHTe) in cooperation with Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI) organised the programme at the conference room of Netrakona district press club. The training programme was arranged aiming at sensitizing journalists to continue media campaign for preventing child drowning, organisers told the news agency. Deputy Commissioner of Netrakona Anjana Khan Majlish formally inaugurated the programme calling upon the journalists to create mass awareness through projecting media reports for averting child drowning. A total of 20 newsmen from different media outlets, both print and electronics and agencies are taking part in the training workshop. — BSS
