Two college students go missing in Padma
Two college students went missing in the Padma River while taking bath in Shrirampur area of Rajshahi city on Saturday. They are Golam Sarwar Saim (17), son of Saidur Rahman and Rifat Khandakar (17), son of late Khaja Moin Uddin, hailing from Meherchandi and Dargapara areas of the city respectively. They are the first year students of higher secondary level at local Rajshahi Cantonment Public School and College. Another student Nasir Hasan said four friends including him went to the river to take bath around 11am and no one of them knew how to swim. At one stage, Saim and Rifat went missing, he said, adding that they tried to save them but failed. Wahidul Islam, deputy director of Rajshahi Fire Service and Civil Defence, said their divers were conducting rescue operation in the river after being informed by locals. He said the students might have drowned as they didn't know how to swim, but the search operation will continue. — UNB
Baby stolen from Natore rescued in Kushtia
A newborn girl, who was stolen from the Natore Sadar Hospital yesterday, was rescued from Kushtia in the early hours of Saturday.A woman was arrested in connection with the abduction. Police is likely to bring the baby back to Natore by 12 pm, said Natore sadar thana sources. The baby was taken away from her mother's room in the hospital by a woman disguised as a staff member on Friday. Hasna Hena, wife of bank officer Mahfuzur Rahman and a resident of Mohishdanga village of Noldanga upazila, gave birth to the baby girl on Thursday. The woman who abducted the baby apparently told the mother and her attendees that she was taking the baby for a check-up. — UNB
Slit-throat body of farmer recovered in M'singh
The slit-throat body of a 50-year-old farmer was recovered from his house while his wife was rescued in senseless condition from a paddy field nearby in Muktagacha upazila of Mymensingh on Saturday. The deceased is Md Shahjahan of Ghaturui village under Mankon union of the upazila and his wife is Rashida Begum (42), said Md Abdul Majid, officer-in-charge of Muktagacha thana, Shahjahan married Rashida a year back after his first wife died, said the OC. Miscreants stabbed and slit his throat sometime on Friday night, he said. Rashida was sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for treatment, a knife used in the killing was recovered, added the police official. An investigation is ongoing, no one has so far been arrested in this connection, the OC Majid said.There had been a dispute between Shahjahan and his brother over ancestral property and arbitration was scheduled to be held in the morning, Hasmat Ali, a neighbor of the deceased said. — UNB
