Man's body found in Hatirjheel Lake
Police have recovered a man's body from the city's Hatirjheel Lake. The body was found floating in the water near Modhubag Bridge around 10:30 am on Friday, said Mukul Ranjan Dev, sub-inspector of Hatirjheel thana, said. The man appeared to be around 25 years old, and police are trying to use his fingerprints to confirm his identity. The body has been sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital's morgue for an autopsy to check for any injury marks. The victim was wearing a black full-sleeve shirt and jeans. Two siblings electrocuted in Kurigram
Two minor siblings died from electrocution at Sonagachhi village in Phulbari upazila of Kurigram on Thursday afternoon. The deceased were Tofayel Hossain, 11 and his younger sister Seba Khatun, 4.1. Their father is Md Sakimuddi of the village under Shimulbari union. Local UP Chairman Md Shariful Alam Sohel said the victims' elder brother was charging his auto-rickshaw at their home in the afternoon. He mistakenly put the live electric wire on the rickshaw when the siblings were in the vehicle, he said, adding that the incident left the duo dead on the spot. Pran Krisna Debnath, officer-in-charge of Phulbari thana, confirmed the news of deaths, saying that police were looking into the matter. — UNB
Mother killed, son and daughter hurt
in C'nawabganj road accident
A 65-year-old woman was killed and her son and daughter were injured as a CNG-run auto-rickshaw overturned and fell into a roadside ditch after hitting a dog at Sherpur under Parbatipur union of Gomostapur upazila in the district on Thursday afternoon. The dead is Shreemoti Laksmi (65), wife of Shree Krishna and the injured were her son Shree Ripon (30), and her daughter Shreemoti Bobita (18) of Dampura village in Chapainawabganj district. Police said they were returning home from Rajshahi Medical College Hospital after receiving treatment. When they reached Sherpur, suddenly a dog came in front of their vehicle. At this, the CNG-run auto-rickshaw overturned and fell into a roadside ditch killing Laksmi on the spot around 3.30pm. Being informed, a fire service team rushed to the spot and rescued the injured persons and admitted them to the Gomostapur Upazila Health Complex. Officer-in-charge (OC) of Gomostapur thana Md. Four drown, one missing in three dists
Four children drowned, one went missing in Chapainawabganj, Habiganj and Mymensingh districts on Friday and Thursday. Two children drowned and one went missing while taking baths in Chapainawabganj and Habiganj districts respectively on Friday. The dead are Reshma Khatun (7), daughter of Rehsan Ali of Sonapatti village under Sadar upazila of Chapainawabganj and Tanvir (7), son of Rahim Miah of Kharki area under Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj. The missing Muslema Khatun (14) is cousin of the deceased Reshma. Mahfuzul Hoque Chowdhury, inspector of Chapainawabganj Sadar thana, said Reshma and Muslema went down in the Padma River to take bath at a ghat adjacent to Charbagdanga union parishad around 11:00 am. At one stage, they drowned in the river but locals retrieved Reshma's body after a while, he said. Divers from Fire Service and Civil Defence are conducting search operations, the inspector added. Meanwhile, Hafezia madrasha student Tanvir drowned in a pond of the institution while taking a bath around 10:30am. Meanwhile, two teenagers drowned in the Narsunda river in Nandail upazila of Mymensingh on Thursday. The deceased Kamrul Islam (12) is the son of Nazrul Islam and Sohag Mia (14) is the son of Hormuz Ali of Garua village of Achargaon union of the upazila. According to police and locals, five boys of Garua village went to the river by a banana raft for a bath in the afternoon. They were playing in the river with a banana raft. Suddenly, they fell from the raft and drowned. — UNB
Man gets death for killing baby girl in B'baria
A Brahmanbaria court has sentenced a man to death for killing a baby girl after rape in Sarail upazila of the district in 2019. Judge of Brahmanbaria Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2 Rezaul Karim handed down the sentence in the presence of the convict, Mobarok Mia alias Kanai Mia (50), hailed from Poshchim Kuttapara village in the upazila, at the court. The court also fined him Taka 100,000. According to the prosecution, on December 16 in 2019, the girl went missing at her village. Police recovered her body the next day from a bamboo garden close to her house. Following the murder, the girl's mother filed a case accusing unnamed people with Sarail thana. Police pressed the charge sheet accusing Mobarok Mia in September, 2020. Testifying witnesses and evidences, the court gave the order in presence of Mobarok Mia, said, assistant Public Prosecutor Syed Merajul Islam. — BSS
