72 Covid-19 cases reported
Bangladesh reported 72 more Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours until Thursday morning. With the new numbers, the country's total caseload rose to 2,044,713 according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). The daily case test positivity rate was 3.52 percent while 2047 samples were tested, it said. The recovery rate remained unchanged at 98.38 percent. The death rate also remained unchanged at 1.44 per cent. — UNB
Cop dies after being shot with his own gun
A police constable died after he allegedly shot himself in the throat with his own rifle in front of Sonali Bank police box in Panchagarh town, said a police official quoting his colleagues. The dead is Firoj Ahmed (27), son of Abu Sayeed of Dinajpur's Nawabganj upazila Officer-in-charge (OC) of Panchagarh Sadar thana Abdul Latif Mia said Firoz joined the Panchagarh Sonali Bank guard duty on July 31. "On Thursday night, he shot himself in the throat with his rifle while on duty at the main branch of Panchagarh Sonali Bank in the district. Following the incident, other colleagues took him to Panchagarh Modern Sadar Hospital where duty doctor Dr Mirza Saidul Islam declared him dead," he said. Constable Firoz's body will be handed over to the family after autopsy, said OC Latif. According to police sources, Firoz was talking to his wife Upoma on mobile phone. At one point, he got agitated and shot himself in the neck. UNB
Two killed in Gazipur road crash
The tyre of a microbus exploded and sent the vehicle spiralling out of control, leaving two passengers dead and eight others injured in Gazipur's Konabari.The incident occurred around 6:00 am on Friday in Dhaka-Tangail highway's Baimail area, said Konabari Police SI Abul Kashem. The dead are Md Shah Alam and Jewel Mia. Police have yet to find out their details. Several friends were travelling from Gazipur's Kashimpur to Kishoreganj's Nikli in a microbus on Friday morning when a wheel exploded, causing the vehicle to slam into a nearby covered van and the road divider. The driver was also injured in the incident. The victims were pulled out of the crash and sent to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital and Sheikh Fazilatunnessa Mujib Memorial Hospital, where doctors declared the two dead. The injured are in hospital care for now. — Bdnews24.com
